Blog: The Role of Latinos in Hollywood? – August 15, 2011

Hello everyone! This is Yesenia, the new intern for Conectando Latinos. I am currently a senior at San Francisco State University and only a year away from graduating with my B.S. in Hospitality! I look forward to writing weekly blogs about anything having to do with the Latin Community and of course planning some fun events for all of you to enjoy!

This past Wednesday, George Lopez’s show, “Lopez Tonight” got cancelled, leading to the loss of a Latino presence in late night. The show played a stepping-stone for a Latino show in late night. The show was on air for almost two years. George Lopez had already made a presence in the entertainment industry with his past show “The George Lopez Show” and his roles in movies.

Fortunately, Latinos still have an appearance in the entertainment industry. Modern Family has been a big success, and Columbian actress Sofia Vergara is part of it. Not to mention the rise of Disney stars, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato who have a Mexican roots in their background. Selena Gomez plays homage to mariachi bands by including them in her latest music video for her song “Love You Like a Love Song”.

There are other entertainers that are also marking the way for Latinos. Latinos are slowly but surely entering the entertainment industry. Latinos must keep working towards leaving a bigger mark in Hollywood, and there is still a long way to go before we leave a solid presence, but I’m optimistic with all the great talent out there. Who is your favorite Latino talent out there?

If you have any ideas or suggestions for what you would like to read about, let us know! Wish you all a great week!
